Student Spotlight
Ashley Scull, BHA ’17
Master’s in Healthcare Administration ’21
A graduate student in our Master’s degree program in Healthcare Administration, Ashley Scull is also a 2017 alumna of our Bachelors’ program. When asked what first attracted her to PA College, she shares: “My first impression of the college was a phone conversation with Dr. Karen Dielmann during the pre-application phase. We discussed how a healthcare administration degree would combine my existing experience and allow me to apply many of the skills I had acquired in my retail career to a healthcare setting. She ended up being my advisor and a great support to me during my time at the college and afterwards.” Now immersed in her second degree program, Ashley continues to point to the faculty as her favorite part of PA College. Instructors such as Dr. Dielmann, Dr. Tomomi Horning and many others, along with the small class size, provide Ashley with the opportunity to really engage with instructors and fellow students. She adds: “I have enjoyed and take great pride in the growth of the college over the past couple years! I try to participate in any alumni or student events and try to give back any way I can.” Recently, Ashley was able to represent both the student and alumni experiences at a networking event during Career & Grad Week at the college.
Ashley currently works as a Healthcare Recruiter for the staffing business line at Maxim Health Care. She hopes to continue on a career path with Maxim that leads to a Business Development Manager opportunity, and beyond that, an Operations Manager or Director of Business Operations for an office. “I was attracted to my current role and organization because it combined my 13 years of experience in general management and sales with my new degree in healthcare administration. My organization has a Servant Leadership philosophy and a great office culture which was important to me when searching for the right position for me,” shares Ashley.
Ashley lives in the Reading area and enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, and her newly adopted puppy, Cooper. A lifelong Flyers, Eagles and Phillies fan, she also enjoys keeping up with the Philadelphia sports teams, and hockey in particular.
Alumni Spotlight
Adriane L. Freeman BSN ‘14, ASN ‘10
Nurse Manager, Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine, 7N Medical Telemetry
“Having attended PA College for both my ASN and BSN degrees, I truly feel that I was set up for success in any nursing career path I choose to take,” shares two-time alumna Adriane Freeman. “Just like Lancaster General Health, PA College sets the bar very high for quality and safety standards. Setting high expectations is something I have carried with me throughout my career and will always continue to do so in my future. This attribute is a gift that was engrained at the start of my educational journey at PA College. I made many lasting memories during both experiences at PA College. I developed friendships that will last a lifetime and discovered many colleague connections that still continue to be valuable in my career today.”
Adriane has worked for LGH for almost 18 years. While most of her bedside experience was in critical care, she also worked in medical/surgical, women’s health, emergency medicine, mental health. In 2016, Adriane transitioned into her current leadership role as a nurse manager on a medical/telemetry unit (7N). Previously, she was a manager for the inpatient mental health unit and the behavioral health unit in the emergency department. “As part of the 7N team, I feel that I work for some of the most wonderful health care professionals that exist,” says Adriane. The team recently earned an award for being one of only four units in the entire hospital to exceed our “likelihood to recommend” scores (as indicated by discharged patients) for 5 consecutive months. In 2018, the 7N north team was nominated for a team Daisy award and commended by LGH CEO Jan Bergen for saving the life of a patient who experienced a very unexpected and traumatic cardiac arrest on the unit.
Adriane is proud of the individual Daisy award she received in 2014 and her nomination for the Nightingale Nurse Manager Award in 2016. She is also currently continuing her education, expecting to graduate from Millersville University in May 2020 as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Ever the loyal alum, Adriane adds: “At the time I enrolled, PA College didn’t offer this program, or else I would have gladly enrolled for my third PA College degree!”
A wife and mother of four children (ages 16, 14, 12, and 8), Adriane feels she is “simply spoiled rotten with a husband who is out of this world. The most important thing in his life is family and he goes above and beyond to make us his priority. He is a man of faith who exemplifies what it means to be a genuinely good man.” Currently employed as a security officer of LGH, Adriane adds with a smile, “this man gets the pleasure of being with me both at work and at home,” where they share their lives with many animals including two spoiled Himalayan cats, two canine mutts, a hairless rat, a leopard gecko, and even an alpaca (she doesn’t live in the home). Ariane sums it up: “As I tell most people I meet on a regular basis, I am truly living the dream!”
