Grants & Scholarships

Discover grants, scholarships and student financial awards that can help make tuition more affordable.

Grants

A grant is a monetary award that the student is not required to repay. Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences students may be eligible for:

  • Federal Pell grants
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)
  • Pennsylvania State Grants (administered by PHEAA)

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Financial need as determined by the federal government
  • Recipient must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Recipient cannot already have earned a bachelor’s degree
  • Recipient must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Recipient must comply with Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ Financial Aid Academic Progress Policy
  • Recipient must remain enrolled in classes

Federal Pell Grant

  • The U.S. Department of Education issues limits on the duration of a student’s eligibility to receive a Federal Pell Grant to the equivalent of 6 years (12 semesters or 600 percent). If a student’s Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) equals or exceeds 600 percent, the student may no longer receive Pell Grant funding. If a Pell Grant is greater than 500 percent but less than 600 percent, the student may be eligible for a reduced scheduled award. The maximum amount is $5,815 for the 2016–2017 year.
  • This grant can be awarded for less than 6 credits if the U.S. Department of Education determines that the student is eligible.
  • Students must adhere to the College’s drug policy as listed in the Student Handbook.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

  • Administered by the Student Financial Services, Financial Aid Office
  • Priority given to students receiving a Federal Pell Grant
  • Awarded to students with exceptional financial need

Pennsylvania State Grants (administered by PHEAA)

  • Complete the free application for FAFSA no later than May 1st of each year.
  • Complete the Status Notice form at pheaa.org under Account Access.
  • Be a Pennsylvania resident for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the filing date of the FAFSA application.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits per semester.
  • Be enrolled in an approved program of study of at least two academic years.
  • Maintain academic progress as defined by PHEAA.
  • Earn, through classroom instruction, at least 50 percent of the total credit hours required for completing the program of study.
  • Only courses required for the degree can count toward enrollment status of a Pennsylvania State Grant.
  • The applicant cannot be in default or have a claim of default pending on an education loan guaranteed or reinsured by the federal government, state government or institution.

Scholarships

PA College offers up to $20,000 in scholarship for new students entering a three or four year bachelor’s degree program, or a “2+2” associate to bachelor’s degree track.

The following PA College scholarships were established by many generous alumni, friends and donors.

Alumni Association Scholarship

The College Alumni Association will provide scholarships to deserving students in an effort to promote education for future or current health care providers. Scholarships will be awarded in four categories: 1) student enrolled in any nursing program at PA College; 2) student enrolled in any health science program at PA College; 3) student enrolled in any program at PA College; and 4) student who is an alumnus of PA College and is continuing his/her education through enrollment in any program at PA College

Ty Anderson Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the family of Ty Anderson, a beloved 1994 nursing graduate who died in 1995. Recipients of the award will exhibit outstanding dedication to the nursing profession through their enthusiasm and academic achievements.

Mary Ellen Bachman Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established by Mary Ellen Bachman. Beginning in 2018-19, the award will support students enrolled in any of the College’s nursing programs, with preference given to students who are pursuing a baccalaureate degree or higher.

Joanna B. Bailes Nursing Scholarship

The Joanna Bailes Nursing Scholarship Award was established in 2006 by Mr. and Mrs. William Bailes. The fund will provide an annual scholarship award to a Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing student.

Ann B. Barshinger Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in 2016 by Ann B. Barshinger. The award supports students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the 3-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Bedside Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was anonymously established in 1989 and is awarded to nursing students who exhibit superior bedside nursing.

Dr. Thomas E. and Elizabeth A. Beeman Scholarship

This award was established in 2009 by Thomas and Elizabeth Beeman. The endowed fund will provide an annual scholarship award to a Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences health sciences student with the greatest financial need.

Drs. Lawrence I. and Rita M. Bonchek Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 by Drs. Lawrence and Rita Bonchek. The endowed fund will provide an annual scholarship award to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. Must be a first-generation college student.

Dr. Charles D. Bortle Memorial Paramedic Scholarship

The Dr. Charles D. Bortle Memorial Paramedic Scholarship was established by Deborah Bortle in memory of her late husband. The Bortle Scholarship will provide will provide an annual scholarship to a student in the paramedic program, from Fall 2018 – Fall 2027.

Lois R. Brewer Endowed Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1983 through a bequest made by Lois R. Brewer. The scholarship is awarded to eligible nursing students.

Brossman Foundation Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by the William and Gemina Brossman Charitable Foundation, which was founded by Mrs. Bertha Brossman Blair. The endowed fund will provide annual need-based scholarship awards to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs.

Emmett M. Cooper, MD, Nursing Scholarship

The Emmett M. Cooper, MD Nursing Scholarship Award was established in 2005 by Dr. Emmett M. Cooper. The fund will provide an annual scholarship award to a Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing student.

CoreSource Leadership Achievement in Health Sciences Excellence Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2012 by CoreSource, Inc. The scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in a health sciences program.

Davenport Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by the Davenport Family Foundation. The fund will provide annual need-based scholarship awards to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs.

Reginald J. Dean Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship fund was established in 2017 by Robert and Laura Beard. The fund will provide annual need-based scholarship awards to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. Preference will be given to students with military experience.

Eastwood Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Eastwood Family to support two annual scholarships for students enrolled in any of the College’s nursing programs, from Fall 2016 – Fall 2020.

Elmer L. Esbenshade Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established through a trust begun by Mr. Esbenshade in 1979 in support of the education of nursing students who are residents of Lancaster County.

Fulton Bank Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established by Fulton Bank to provide annual financial scholarships to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. To be awarded Fall 2017 – Fall 2021.

Kitt and Bill Gamber Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Kitt and Bill Gamber. The endowed fund will provide annual need-based scholarship awards to nursing students.

Ryan Gardina Memorial Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2005 by the family and friends of Ryan Gardina. Ryan, a Lancaster General Hospital employee who aspired to a career in nursing, died in 2004. The scholarship will be awarded to eligible nursing students who exhibit compassion and caring.

Joan R. Gibbel RN ’57 Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by Joan R. Gibbel RN, a 1957 nursing graduate. The endowed fund will provide scholarship awards to nursing students pursuing an Associate or Bachelor degree. Preference will be given for individuals who are graduates from Warwick High School in Lititz.

Hamill Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Hamill Family to support annual scholarships for students enrolled in the 2+2 Nursing program. To be awarded from Fall 2016 – Fall 2019.

The S. Dale and Sadie High Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by S. Dale and Sadie High. The endowed fund will provide scholarships for students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs.

Colette and James Hipolit Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Colette and James Hipolit for students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs.

Clara Young Hoffman Memorial Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1996 by Harvey E. Hoffman, in memory of his wife Clara Young Hoffman, a 1940 graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing.

Arthur F. Jones, Jr., M.D. Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1988 by the Lancaster General Hospital Medical & Dental Office and the family and friends of Dr. Jones, this endowed scholarship benefits nursing students who “exemplifies character, integrity, sincerity, leadership, and achievement – those qualities so admired in Dr. Jones.”

Margaret A. Judge RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in 2011, by Dr. Joseph M. Judge, in memory of his wife. The fund provides an annual scholarship award to students enrolled in any of the College’s nursing programs.

Andrew W. Koch, M.D. Radiography Endowed Scholarship Fund  

The Koch scholarship fund was established in 1997 by Lancaster Radiology Associates in honor of Dr. Koch. The endowed fund provides scholarship awards for students enrolled in Radiography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Kuhlengel Family Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established by Drs. Keith and Barbara Kuhlengel to provide annual financial scholarships to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. To be awarded from Fall 2016 – Fall 2018.

Lancaster Osteopathic Foundation Nurses Scholarship

Awards scholarships to Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students according to the guidelines established by the foundation. Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences is very appreciative of the continued support of the Lancaster Osteopathic Foundation.

William Harris Locke, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund

This endowed fund was established in 2018 by Robert A. Locke in memory of  his brother William Harris Locke, Jr. (1935-2018) and provides scholarships to students enrolled in the Respiratory Care program.

Stephen D. Lockey, Sr., MD Memorial Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2001 by the Board of Directors of the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of Lancaster County, in memory of Stephen D. Lockey, Sr., MD (1904–1985) and provides scholarship awards for nursing students who are residents of Pennsylvania.

Anna A. Lombardo Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2013 in memory of Anna A. Lombardo by her nine nieces and nephews. The scholarship supports eligible nursing students with preference for Lancaster City residents.

Sylvia B. Longnecker ’41 Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2009 by the nieces and nephews of Sylvia B. Longnecker, a 1941 graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. The scholarship is awarded to eligible nursing students.

Morell Family Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established by the Morell Family to provide annual financial scholarships to students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. To be awarded from Fall 2016 – Fall 2020.

Alma S. Mueller Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2010 by Mrs. Mueller’s sons, in support of scholarships for nursing students.

Lorna Simmons Nolt ‘59 Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 2016 by Joseph and Marianne Nolt in memory of Joe’s first wife, Lorna Simmons Nolt, a 1959 nursing alumna. This fund provides scholarships for students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs, with a preference for students pursuing the study of nursing.

Novus Surgical, Inc. Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Novus Surgical, Inc. as part of a three-year strategic educational partnership with PA College. To support two annual scholarship awards to students enrolled in any academic program from Spring 2018 – Fall 2020. Student must have no personal or professional connection to Novus Surgical.

Erin McCartney Nusbaum Radiography Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2005 in Erin’s memory by her family and friends. This scholarship supports second-year students enrolled in the Radiography program.

Ward M. O’Donnell, MD Medical Technology Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1997 by the family of Dr. O’Donnell, a long-time supporter of health care education. The scholarship is awarded to eligible students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Science program.

Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences Scholarship

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to any student demonstrating financial need.

Phyllis Ward Peters Endowed Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1994 by the late Phyllis Ward Peters. The scholarship supports nursing students who consistently demonstrate exceptional compassion for patients and demonstrate excellence in bedside nursing.

Susan B. (Nunemacher) Pichini ’78 and Guido M. Pichini Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Susan Pichini, a proud nursing alumna, and her husband, Guido Pichini. The Pichini scholarship will be awarded annually to a student or students enrolled in a nursing program at PA College.

Mary James Risk Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2005 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Risk. The scholarship fund is awarded to nursing students.

Thomas A. & Georgina T. Russo Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Thomas A. and Georgina T. Russo. The Russos have established this scholarship for first-generation college students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs.

The Seraph Foundation Endowed Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2016 by The Seraph Foundation. The scholarship supports students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program. Preference will be given to exemplary students enrolled in the three-year BSN program.

Bill and Eileen Shaughnessy Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Eileen and William Shaughnessy. This scholarship will be awarded to a student entering the full-time baccalaureate nursing program at PA College.  Preference will be given to a recently honorably discharged military service member; ideally someone who was a medic and now wishes to continue to assist others as a nurse.

Margaret K. Shenk Endowed Scholarship

Mrs. Margaret K. Shenk established a trust in 2004 to benefit a nursing student who is a resident of Lancaster County.

Shenk Family Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship was first established in 2001 as the Rebecca Jean Shenk Scholarship by F. Paul and Anna Ruth Shenk in memory of their daughter. The fund supports students enrolled in a nursing program at PA College. Preference will be given to students interested in pursuing careers working in an emergency room.

John O. Shirk Memorial Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2011 by the Shirk family, in memory of John O. Shirk, for students who are enrolled in a nursing program at PA College and who are residents of Lancaster County.

B. Frank Snavely Memorial Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1993 by Clarence L. Snavely in memory of his father B. Frank Snavely who was a former Chairman of the Board of Lancaster General Hospital. The scholarship supports students enrolled in any PA College program.

Henry P. and Mary B. Stager Memorial Nursing Scholarship

This endowed fund was established by Henry and Mary Beane Stager in 1994 in support of nursing student scholarships.

Kenneth G. and Susan H. Stoudt Endowed Scholarship Fund

This endowed fund was established in 2016 by Kenneth and Susan Stoudt in support of scholarships for students enrolled in any of the College’s academic programs. Preference will be given to students who have graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School or McCaskey High School, are affiliated with Milagro House of Lancaster, and intend to pursue a career in the field of women’s medicine or family practice.

Ruth C. Todd Memorial Scholarship

This fund was initially funded in 2002 by the late Paul G. Wedel and the board of directors of Lancaster General Hospital in memory of Ruth C. Todd.

UGI Utilities, Inc. Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2017 by UGI Utilities, Inc. to support two annual scholarship awards for students enrolled in any academic program. To be awarded from Fall 2017 – Fall 2021.

United Auxiliaries Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2017 by the United Auxiliaries to Lancaster General Hospital. This fund supports scholarships for PA College nursing students. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in the RN to BSN Bachelor’s degree in Nursing program.

Paul G. and Jean M. Wedel Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2014 by the family of the late Paul G. Wedel and his late wife Jean M. Wedel. The scholarship provides support to students enrolled in any academic program.

Weller Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by Dennis Weller in honor of his daughters, PA College alumnae Gretchen (Weller) Stevenson ’06 and Emily (Weller) Gehron ’07. The scholarship is awarded to eligible nursing students.

Eleanor B. Yohn Nursing Scholarships

Mrs. Yohn and her late husband Clarence established their first nursing scholarship in 1988. Both funds are awarded to a student that “has true financial need and a potential for developing superior bedside nursing skills and empathy for the patient.”

Awards

Judith A. Weaver Hibel Excellence in Care of Families in the Community Award

Created in 2003 by Sharon Fritz ‘74 in honor of her classmate, Judith A. Weaver Hibel ’74, who is currently a practicing pediatric nurse practitioner. The award is made to nursing students who demonstrate academic and clinical excellence in Families in Community.

Kenneth G. Stoudt Faculty Excellence Award

Awarded to a full-time faculty member at PA College who has demonstrated leadership, excellence and creativity during the academic year.

Robert M. and Thelma G. Flory Doctoral Study Award

To award funds designated for the sole purpose of doctoral study, doctoral research or post-doctoral research of nursing faculty who teach nursing students to improve nursing education and inspire nursing students for lifelong learning.

Student Emergency Fund

The Student Emergency Fund was established in 2010 as the Learning Resources Award by an anonymous donor to provide quick response emergency grants to Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences students with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to take a leave of absence or drop out.

Glant-Gibson-Glunt Educational Loan Fund

Provides no-interest student loans to qualified PA College nursing students with financial need.
